Who is Trooper Johnson?

Trooper Johnson, widely recognized as on of the top wheelchair basketball players in the country, was selected to the U.S. Natonal Team from 1990-2004.  Johnson competed in the Paralympic Games in 1992, 1996, 2000, and 2004, and World Championships in 1994 and 1998.  Johnson is also the Captain of the Golden State Road Warriors wheelchair basketball team.  The Road Warriors are the official wheelchair basketball team of the Golden State Warriors.  Johnson led the Road Warriors to Two National Championships in 1997 and 2002.  Trooper is now the Youth Sports Program Coordinator for BORP (Bay Area outreach & Recreation Program) in Berkeley, Ca.  
BORP provides opportunities for kids with physical disabilities to participate in programs ranging from recreational outdoor activities to Championship sports teams.

During July, 2000, Johnson made his second successful climb of El Capitan in Yosemite Valley, California.  El Capitan is the largest Sheer face of granite in the world, rising 3,200 feet from the valley floor.  Climbers Scott Stowe and Dave Bengston led the route which took Johnson 38.5 hours to complete.  The climb was used as a fundraiser to renovate the Spinal Cord unit of Santa Clara Valley Medical Center.  Trooper Johnson had completed his first attempt on El Capitan in 1998, making him the 2nd paraplegic to Climb the rock.

Disabled in an automobile accident at the age of 17, Johnson has been actively involved in wheelchair athletics for the past 18 years.  He has served on the Athletic Advisory Council for the U.S. Olympic Committee/Wheelchair Sports USA.

Johnson conducts motivational and disability awareness/prevention programs in schools throughout the country.  He has reached more than 450,000 students during the past 15 years and even made a presentation with then Vice President Gore. 
In 1997 Johnson received a commendation from the California Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports.

In 1995 the American Cancer Society/Santa Clara chapter named Johnson "Celebrity of the Year"
In 1993, Johnson received the "Celebration of Courage, Adult of the Year" award from the Timpany Center in San Jose for his sports accomplishments and work in the community.
